Everything really is bigger in Texas. After landing in Houston and picking up our rental car, we were ready to experience as much of this massive state as we could in one action-packed weekend. The plan? A whirlwind road trip that would take us from the beaches of Galveston to the historic streets of San Antonio—squeezing in space exploration, seafood, cowboys, beautiful views, historic places and cathedral light shows along the way.
If you’ve only got a few days in Texas, this itinerary is for you. We’ll show you how to soak up the best of the Lone Star State with a balance of adventure, history, and great food. Saddle up, because this trip is one for the books!
Day 1: Houston & Galveston

Fly Direct into Houston
We found a great direct flight from Harrisburg PA right into Houston, making it easy to hit the ground running. After a quick pick-up at the rental car counter, we hit the road for a 50-mile drive south to Galveston, ready for sun and sand.
Galveston Beach & Pleasure Pier
Galveston’s historic Pleasure Pier is the perfect mix of old-school boardwalk fun and classic beach vibes. We spent the afternoon soaking up the sun, riding some of the pier’s roller coasters (a thrill with ocean views), and treating ourselves to some of the freshest seafood around. Don’t miss Shrimp ‘N Stuff, a local favorite that absolutely lives up to the hype.
Back to Houston for the Space Center
After soaking up the sun in Galveston, we headed back to Houston for one of the most iconic attractions in the area—the Space Center Houston. This is an absolute must-see for any first-time visitor, especially if you’ve ever dreamed of being an astronaut (like these two nerdy teachers!). Whether you’re a space enthusiast, history buff, or traveling with kids, there’s something here to ignite everyone’s sense of wonder.
Explore NASA’s History
Space Center Houston is not just a museum; it’s the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, which has been the home of human spaceflight since the 1960s. We were captivated by the wealth of exhibits that take you through NASA’s pioneering missions, from the Mercury and Gemini programs to the Apollo moon landings. Seeing the actual Apollo 17 command module in person was nothing short of awe-inspiring.

Interactive Exhibits
For hands-on learners, the interactive exhibits are where the Space Center really shines. We got to test our space skills in the astronaut training simulators, which give you a small taste of what it’s like to walk in the boots of a NASA astronaut. There are also virtual reality experiences and touchable moon rocks that make space exploration feel real and accessible, even for those of us still grounded on Earth!
Don’t Miss the Tram Tour
One of the highlights of any visit to Space Center Houston is the NASA Tram Tour, which takes you behind the scenes at Johnson Space Center. The tour includes a stop at Mission Control, where NASA engineers monitor real-time operations for the International Space Station. You’ll also see the Saturn V rocket, one of the most powerful rockets ever built, up close at Rocket Park. Just be sure to reserve your tram tickets as soon as you arrive, as this tour is incredibly popular!

Great for Kids and Families
Space Center Houston is designed with families in mind. Younger visitors will love Kid’s Space Place, an interactive area with age-appropriate exhibits on space, science, and engineering. Be sure to check out their schedule for live demonstrations or even a chance to meet an astronaut!
Pro Tips for Your Visit:
- Time Commitment: Plan to spend at least 3–4 hours here to fully explore the exhibits, take the tram tour, and visit the gift shop (don’t leave without some NASA swag!).
- Best Time to Visit: If you’re hoping to avoid the crowds, weekdays and early mornings are your best bet.
- Tickets: Consider purchasing tickets online in advance to skip the lines and secure a spot on the tram tour. And if you’re a true space geek, look into the Level 9 VIP Tour for exclusive access to NASA’s behind-the-scenes operations.
Dinner at the Downtown Aquarium
We wrapped up Day 1 at the Downtown Aquarium. Picture this: you’re seated next to a giant fish tank, surrounded by sea creatures as you enjoy dinner. It’s a surreal experience that’s both relaxing and totally unique. The seafood options are solid, but don’t sleep on the wine list and the Cajun pasta—trust us!
Day 2: Journey to San Antonio
Morning Drive to San Antonio
We hit the road bright and early for our drive to San Antonio. The 3-hour drive is surprisingly scenic, with wide-open Texas landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. If you have time, make a pit stop in Buc-ee’s, the iconic Texas gas station that’s basically a destination in itself. Grab some snacks for the road and fuel up for the next adventure!
Buc-ee’s: More Than Just a Pit Stop
If you’re road-tripping in Texas, Buc-ee’s is a must-stop destination all on its own. This iconic gas station chain is legendary for its sprawling size, quirky mascot (a friendly beaver), and its surprisingly good food.
Here’s what you need to know before your first visit to Buc-ee’s:
- Try the Beaver Nuggets: These sweet, crunchy caramel corn treats are a fan favorite. Perfect for snacking on during the long drive!
- Stock Up on BBQ: Buc-ee’s has a full BBQ counter, and the brisket sandwiches are delicious. They’re freshly made, so grab one to-go if you’re looking for a true taste of Texas.
- Cleanest Bathrooms Around: Buc-ee’s prides itself on having the cleanest restrooms you’ll find on the road. Seriously, it’s a game-changer on long road trips.
- Unique Souvenirs: From Texas-themed t-shirts to homemade fudge and jerky, Buc-ee’s has a little bit of everything. It’s the perfect place to grab a quirky souvenir or a snack for the road.
Even if you just stop for gas, it’s worth popping inside Buc-ee’s for the full Texas road trip experience.
Hidden Gem Detour: Newman’s Castle and Bakery and Award Winning BBQ
If you’re looking for a quirky, off-the-beaten-path stop on your Texas road trip, Newman’s Castle in Bellville is a must-see. Just an hour and a half west of Houston, this medieval-style castle is tucked away in the countryside, offering a fun and unexpected experience.
- Touring the Castle: Built by a local baker, Newman’s Castle is a labor of love that feels like you’ve stepped straight into a fairytale. You can take a guided tour to explore the drawbridge, moat, and towers, all while learning about the fascinating story behind its construction. Make sure to call ahead for reservations, as tours fill up fast!
- Newman’s Bakery: Before or after your castle tour, stop by Newman’s Bakery in downtown Bellville for some fresh-baked treats. Their kolaches are famous, but you really can’t go wrong with any of the pastries. It’s the perfect spot to grab breakfast or a snack before getting back on the road.
Ready for lunch on the road? No Texas road trip would be complete without some award-winning BBQ, and Burnt Bean Co. in Seguin delivers just that. Located about 35 minutes east of San Antonio, this spot is well worth the detour for anyone who loves good barbecue.
- Award-Winning Brisket: Burnt Bean Co. has made a name for itself in the Texas BBQ scene, and for good reason. Their brisket is melt-in-your-mouth tender, with the perfect balance of smoky flavor and a beautiful bark that BBQ enthusiasts crave. It’s no wonder they’ve racked up awards for their craft.
- The Full BBQ Experience: In addition to brisket, their menu offers a range of BBQ classics like ribs, sausage, pulled pork, and some seriously tasty sides. Don’t skip the mac and cheese or their loaded potato salad—these dishes take comfort food to a whole new level.
Pro Tip: Burnt Bean Co. tends to get busy, especially around lunch, so it’s smart to arrive early. Once they’re out of brisket, that’s it for the day! The early start is well worth it to experience what some say is the best BBQ in Texas.
San Antonio
Explore the Riverwalk: San Antonio's Must-See Attraction
No visit to San Antonio is complete without exploring the San Antonio Riverwalk, one of the city’s most iconic and vibrant attractions. This colorful, winding waterway is not just a picturesque place to stroll—it’s packed with history, culture, and plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop.
- Boat Tours on the Riverwalk: One of the best ways to experience the Riverwalk is by hopping on a guided boat tour. These tours not only give you a relaxing cruise along the river but also provide fascinating insights into San Antonio’s history. You’ll learn about the Riverwalk’s creation during the 1930s, its role in revitalizing the city, and fun trivia about nearby landmarks like the Alamo and the Tower of the Americas. Pro tip: take the boat tour in the evening when the Riverwalk is beautifully illuminated with twinkling lights.
- What to See on the Riverwalk: The Riverwalk is more than just a pretty spot for a stroll—it’s home to historic sites like the Spanish Governor’s Palace and the Briscoe Western Art Museum, which gives you a deeper understanding of Texas history and culture. As you explore, you’ll also come across colorful mariachi bands playing by the water, adding to the lively atmosphere.
- Dining and Drinks: With so many riverside restaurants, it can be tough to choose where to eat. We suggest stopping at Casa Rio, one of the oldest and most popular spots on the Riverwalk, for some authentic Tex-Mex and unbeatable river views. If you’re looking for a refreshing drink, the margaritas at Iron Cactus are a crowd favorite, known for their bold flavors and extensive tequila selection.
- Insider Tip: If you’re looking to avoid the crowds, visit the Riverwalk early in the morning for a peaceful, scenic walk along the water. Alternatively, catch the sunset from one of the many patios for a memorable dining experience.
Whether you’re taking a boat tour or just soaking in the sights, the San Antonio Riverwalk is an unforgettable experience that blends culture, history, and relaxation in one of Texas’ most beautiful settings.
Dinner at Bohannan’s: San Antonio’s Premier Steakhouse
For a truly upscale dining experience in San Antonio, Bohannan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood is the place to be. Located just steps from the Riverwalk, this award-winning steakhouse is known for its top-tier cuts of beef, sophisticated atmosphere, and impeccable service.
- The Best Steak in San Antonio: When you dine at Bohannan’s, you can expect nothing short of perfection. Known for serving some of the best dry-aged steaks in Texas, Bohannan’s delivers a melt-in-your-mouth experience that any steak lover will appreciate. We opted for the prime ribeye, cooked to perfection with just the right amount of char. It’s no wonder this steakhouse consistently ranks as one of the best in San Antonio.
- Decadent Sides and Drinks: While the steak is the star, the side dishes at Bohannan’s are equally impressive. The truffle mac and cheese was creamy, rich, and absolutely decadent. Pair your meal with a selection from their extensive wine list, which features a wide range of options curated to complement the flavors of their steaks. For something more classic, their handcrafted cocktails are also a hit—try the Old Fashioned for a perfect pre-dinner drink.

Day 3: The Alamo, Tejas Rodeo, and More
Visit the Alamo
Day 3 was all about Texas history. Our first stop was the Alamo, where we explored the site of one of the most famous battles in American history. Walking through the mission and learning more about the Texas Revolution gave us a newfound appreciation for the state’s rich history. Bring your sunscreen and water for this part of the trip! There are several places where the sun is fierce and shade is hard to come by, but it’s well worth it for a unique look at an important part of American history.
Tejas Rodeo: A True Texas Experience
Tejas Rodeo was hands down one of the absolute highlights of our trip and probably the most authentically Texan thing I’ve ever done! Nestled just outside of San Antonio in the small town of Bulverde, this place offers more than just a rodeo—it’s a full-blown celebration of Texas culture that’s perfect for visitors of all ages.
- Classic Rodeo Action: The rodeo events themselves were thrilling to watch. From bull riding and barrel racing to mutton busting (kids riding sheep!), the action was non-stop and gave us a true taste of the Wild West. If you’ve never been to a rodeo before, this is the perfect place to experience it, as Tejas Rodeo is known for its friendly, family-oriented atmosphere.
- More Than Just a Rodeo: While the rodeo is the main event, Tejas Rodeo offers a full evening of entertainment. After the events, the night really kicks off with live country music and a dance floor full of locals and visitors alike. We grabbed a cold beer, hit the dance floor for some two-stepping, and fully immersed ourselves in the laid-back, country vibes. If you’ve never tried two-stepping, don’t worry—the crowd is welcoming, and you’ll pick it up in no time! We were lucky enough to have a real Texan step in and show us how it’s done! (Thanks, Chip!)
- Pro Tip: Rodeo nights are held every Saturday from March through November, and tickets can sell out, especially during peak season. Be sure to book in advance, and get there early to explore the grounds, grab some food from the concession stands, and find the best seats.
- Texas BBQ & More: While at Tejas Rodeo, you can also feast on some classic Texas BBQ and other comfort foods from their onsite restaurant. You won’t be able to resist the brisket sandwich and chili fries—perfect fuel for a night of rodeo fun.
- Kid-Friendly Fun: If you’re traveling with kids, they’ll love the family-friendly activities, including pony rides, a mechanical bull and petting zoos, giving them a chance to experience the cowboy lifestyle up close. The excitement of the rodeo combined with the interactive atmosphere makes Tejas Rodeo an unforgettable experience for families too.
Whether you’re looking for an authentic slice of Texas culture or just a fun, lively night out, Tejas Rodeo delivers. From the thrilling rodeo events to the down-home country music and dancing, it was truly a perfect Texas night that we’ll never forget.

This stunning 24-minute display of vibrant colors, music, and storytelling projects onto the façade of the cathedral, narrating the rich history of San Antonio in an unforgettable way.
- A Free Cultural Experience: The best part? “The Saga” is completely free to watch, making it an accessible and budget-friendly stop for any visitor. From the indigenous people who first called the area home to the Spanish missions and the modern city’s growth, “The Saga” covers it all in a visually stunning display that’s perfect for all ages.
- Insider Tip: Grab a drink or snack from one of the nearby vendors and settle in for the show. It’s a popular attraction, so coming a little early will give you the chance to take in the atmosphere and admire the cathedral before the lights go down. Also, bring a light jacket as evenings can get cool—even in Texas!
- Historical Significance: San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest standing church in Texas, and seeing it transformed by “The Saga” makes the experience even more special. Whether you’re a history buff or just love a good light show, this is a must-see for anyone visiting San Antonio.
This free, breathtaking experience was the perfect way to wrap up our trip—and is one we highly recommend to anyone visiting the city. It’s not just a light show; it’s a celebration of San Antonio’s past, present, and future.
Before Heading Home, Escape to Serenity: San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden
One of the most peaceful and unexpected stops on our San Antonio journey was the Japanese Tea Garden. Tucked away near Brackenridge Park, this lush, tranquil space feels like you’ve stepped into another country entirely.
- The Gardens: Winding pathways lead you through carefully manicured gardens, koi ponds, and stone bridges, all set against the backdrop of a towering pagoda. The calming sound of waterfalls follows you as you explore, creating an oasis of serenity just minutes from the bustling city.

Where We Stayed: Spark by Hilton
When it comes to comfort and convenience on a road trip, Spark by Hilton was our go-to. We split our stay between two locations—one in Houston and one in San Antonio—to maximize our budget. Spark delivers exactly what you need: a clean, modern room, comfy beds, and all at a price that lets you spend more on experiences (like that multi-course Bohannans dinner!). Plus, knowing we were staying with a trusted brand gave us peace of mind while we focused on making the most of our adventure.
Road Trip Tips for Texas: What You Need to Know
Texas is a state of wide-open spaces and long highways, so here are a few practical tips to make your trip smooth and stress-free:
- Plan Your Gas Stops: In some stretches between cities, gas stations can be few and far between. Make sure to top off the tank whenever you have the chance, especially on the longer drives like Houston to San Antonio.
- Pack for All Weather: Texas weather can be unpredictable, especially if you’re traveling through different regions. It’s a good idea to pack layers, sunscreen, and a rain jacket, just in case.
- Get an Early Start: The Texas sun is no joke, and the afternoons can get hot, especially in the summer. Start your day early to make the most of cooler mornings, and plan for some downtime or indoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
- Rent a Reliable Car: Texas is big—really big—so you’ll want a comfortable, reliable rental car. If you’re planning to hit some off-the-beaten-path spots, consider renting something a little rugged, like an SUV, for extra comfort and security.
- E-ZPass or TollTag: Some roads in Texas, especially around Houston, have tolls. You can save time by getting an E-ZPass or TollTag from your rental car company, so you can zip through without having to stop and pay.
Final Thoughts
Texas is massive, and while you can’t see it all in one weekend, this road trip gave us a taste of three of the state’s most iconic destinations. Whether you’re lounging on the beach in Galveston, exploring the Riverwalk in San Antonio, or blasting off into space at the Houston Space Center, there’s something for everyone. So pack your bags, grab your cowboy hat, and hit the open road—Texas is waiting! Yee Haw!
